NEWTON, MA — Newton police are investigating a series of house break-ins over the past few weeks that may be targeting Asian residents. From June 1 through July 11, there have been five house break-ins that occurred during the day on weekends when no one was home and targeted victims of Asian descent, according to a statement released Tuesday by Mayor Ruthanne Fuller. The break-ins took place on Walnut St., Dedham St., Helene Rd., Quinobequin Rd., and Country Club Rd. They all involved forced entry and the suspect(s) were able to get away with various items including jewelry, cash, and handbags. Since June 13, police have been investigating whether the break-ins are specifically targeting Asian residents, but do not have any definitive information yet. However, video surveillance images from the break-ins on Dedham St. and Helene Rd. show the same person at each location. In March and April, there were two sets of a series of break-ins that led to the arrest of three men, according to Fuller's statement. Newton has had a total of 45 reported break-ins this year. Anyone with information on the break-ins is asked to call Newton police at 617-796-2104 or use the anonymous tip line at 617-796-2121.
