BRAINTREE, MA — District 6 Town Councilor Larry Mackin will seek re-election in Braintree's town election this November, Mackin announced Monday. Mackin was first elected to the council in 2019 and served on several committees over the last two years. They included: Ordinance and Rules, as well as vice chairing the Public Safety Committee and the Public Works Committee. "Serving as the Town Councilor for District 6 has been an amazing experience and an absolute pleasure," Mackin said in a statement. "I have met so many wonderful people and continue to learn more every day. Greatly looking forward to the opportunity to continue the work we have started." When Mackin ran in 2019, he focused on wanting to prevent developers from building high density apartment complexes in residential neighborhoods. Specifically, Mackin referenced a proposal for a 96-unit apartment complex at the intersection of Liberty and Grove streets. But Mackin said this is no longer an issue after the town bought the 1.8-acre parcel, which included the historic Nash-Penniman House. The home was built in 1693, making it one of Braintree's oldest houses. Mayor Charles Kokoros said the purchase allows the town to preserve the house, use more than half the property for open space and use the rest for commercial development. So now, Mackin said he's focusing on improving traffic on Route 37 and building a street hockey rink and new playground at Highlands Elementary School. Mackin said he got the okay from Kokoros to try to get Community Preservation Act funds to pay for the rink and playground. "The playground at the school is the same from when I was a kid," Mackin said. "I want to get that a little more modernized." More about Mackin can be found on his Facebook page. The Braintree town election is Nov. 2. Residents have until Oct. 13 to register to vote in the election.
