Norwalk Common Council Member To Seek Re-Election

NORWALK, CT — Tom Keegan announced this week he has been asked by the Norwalk Republican Party to seek re-election to the city's Common Council. Keegan is the sole Republican member of the council and serves as a minority leader. He represents District D, which encompasses the Northern Norwalk, Cranbury and Silvermine areas of the city. Keegan said Tuesday he was honored and humbled by the endorsement and support. "I promise to serve our community to the best of my ability," Keegan said in a statement. "I have strived to work with my colleagues on the council, Mayor [Harry] Rilling and all city staff to make Norwalk a great place in which to work and live." Carl Dickens, chair of the Norwalk Republican Town Committee, confirmed Keegan's selection Tuesday and noted the city's Republicans hoped to continue to hold the seat in District D. "[Keegan] is the incumbent, has done a great job," Dickens said, "and the Republicans have held the seat in District D for 22 years now and we would like to keep it that way." Democratic council member George Tsiranides also represents District D with Keegan. According to the city website, Keegan is a member of the council's Finance and Claims, Health and Public Safety, Land Use and Building Management, Ordinance, Community Services and Personnel, Planning, Public Works and Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs committees. "My hope is that by collaborating together," Keegan said, "we can continue to improve our schools and school buildings, place focus on smart planning and development and do what's best for all of our citizens in all of our neighborhoods." The Common Council is the law-writing body of Norwalk, according to the city website. The city's charter gives certain administrative powers exclusively to the council and others jointly to the council and Rilling.
