Description

SMITHFIELD, RI — Sick foxes have been reported around Smithfield over the past week. The animals are suffering from mange, the town's Animal Control department said, a fairly common disease in wild animals. Mange is a skin disease caused by a parasite, which leads to itchiness and patchy fur loss. Wide-spread infections can leave an animal susceptible to other illnesses, the department said. It is illegal for anyone to trap or try to give medication to the animals, the department said, which includes Animal Control itself. Feeding animals is also strongly discouraged. Although mange is contagious, it is only spread through direct contact with a sick animal, the department said. Keeping a distance from wildlife can help keep you and your pets safe, Animal Control said.
