Description

MOKENA, IL — The Forest Preserve District of Will County is calling for area residents to come out and participate in several events at Hickory Creek Preserve - LaPorte Road Access, just east of Wolf Road in Mokena. Here's a look at what's happening. What: Gaming in the Forest – Chess. Bring your friends out and experience nature like never before while playing a good game of chess. Grab your favorite chess board and challenge another participant. Forest Preserve staff will have a fire and s'mores in case you need a break from the action before you head into another game. Register online or call (708) 534-8499. When: 2-6 p.m. July 18. What: Moth Mania - Celebrate National Moth Week by exploring the night in search of moths. Learn the different groups of moths and then take a night hike, sharing UV flashlights to search for hidden insects glowing along the trail. Finally, check out the Forest Preserve's "research center" to see if we attracted any winged visitors. Register online or call (708) 946-2216. When: 8-10 p.m. July 23. What: Shooting Stars and Jammin' Guitars - Join the Forest Preserve District for an evening of music, a campfire and the potential to see some shooting stars including the Southern Delta Aquariids, Alpha Capricornids fireballs and the popular Perseids. Bring your own beverages (beer and wine only for those bringing alcohol) and instruments so you can jam. Musicians of all skill levels are welcome. Bring a blanket or camping chair for sitting around the fire. This event is limited to those 21 and over. Register online or call (708) 534-8499. When: 8-10 p.m. July 30.
