By Jon DePaolis, Richard Free Press: MOKENA, Ill. – Mokena has a new police sergeant. The Village Board of Trustees welcomed the newly promoted Sgt. Gregory Selin at the Monday, July 12, regularly scheduled meeting. Police Chief John Keating told the board members that as part of the budget, the Village authorized the hiring of an additional sergeant — increasing the number from five to six. Per the recommendation of Keating, Selin was promoted effective July 1. Keating said Selin was first hired as a patrol officer in Mokena in 2004. "During his tenure with the Mokena Police Department, he has worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, detective, evidence technician, juvenile officer and traffic crash investigator," Keating noted. "Selin has received numerous awards during his career that include a medal of honor, three for lifesaving, 19 for distinguished duty, 12 for exceptional duty and has distinguished himself as an exemplary officer. I'm proud to have Sgt. Gregory Selin as part of the Mokena Police Department supervisory management team." Selin was on-hand for the recognition. "Thank you for the opportunity," he told the board members. Mayor Frank Fleischer thanked Selin for the work he has already done for the Village. "Thank you for the time you've put into the Village up to this point," he said. "We expect nothing but good things from you in the future." Also during the meeting, the Village Board members voted 6-0 to approve the annexation and rezoning of a property located at 11221 194th St. Mokena Director of Economic and Community Development Alan Zordan said the petitioner, former Trustee Joseph Siwinski, was requesting the annexation and rezoning of the property to R-3 single-family residential. "It is surrounded by [primarily single-family] residentially used properties," Zordan noted. He also said the property is currently developed as a single-family home and is connected to the Village's utilities.
