MALIBU, CA — Have you ever wondered why there's a bathtub encased in the rocks along the Solstice Canyon trail? This Sunday, adventuresome Angelenos and travelers can find out by joining a free guided hike up the canyon in Malibu.
Robert's Ruins, a landmark beside a waterfall in the canyon, are what remains of Roberts Ranch House, which was destroyed by a fire in 1982. Owner Fred Roberts commissioned Paul R. Williams, a legendary Los Angeles Archetect, to design the home for his family. Roberts was the founder of Roberts Public Market, a Santa Monica-based chain of grocery and liquor stores started in the late 1920s, according to the Paul R. Williams Project.
Hikers can visit the ruins this Sunday on a guided walk with "Ranger Aaron," according to Eventbrite. The hike is an easy one-mile walk in one direction that will include a room-by-room tour of the home along with images of how it looked before it was destroyed.
The hike begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. and there will be plenty of time for questions after the walk, organizers said. Hikers should bring appropriate shoes, water, a hat and sunblock. Participants are advised to carpool if possible and show up early to grab a parking lot.
The event is free, but those interested should register here as soon as possible. Anyone with questions should call the visitor center at 805-370-2301.
