East Bay Police Seek Catalytic Converter Theft Victims

EAST BAY, CA — Was your catalytic converter stolen recently? If so, San Leandro Police want to hear from you. They are looking for victims beyond San Leandro. Shortly after midnight Sunday, "an officer stopped a vehicle near Washington Avenue and the 880 freeway. Officers ultimately located 16 cut catalytic converters, along with tools to cut those items," police said in a message to the community. "SLPD Detectives are currently coordinating with other agencies to locate victims during the timeframe before the stop." If you were a victim, call San Leandro Police at 510-577-2740. During the first half of this year, San Leandro saw a 65-percent increase in catalytic converter thefts compared to 2020. The part contains precious metals that are sold by the thieves, and the value of the metals is soaring. It's a problem all over the Bay Area. San Leandro Police warn that hybrids, SUVs, and trucks are often targeted because it's easier to access the catalytic converters. "If you own a similar vehicle," police advise, "please consider installing an after-market catalytic converter shield or etching your vehicle's VIN to the vehicle part." If you have a garage, police recommend parking your vehicle inside. Otherwise, park in well-lit areas, preferably where a surveillance camera captures your vehicle.
