Happy National Give Something Away Day, Today, find out how officials were able to rescue the black bear cub at Rex Hospital, learn about a rare flower that lets you smell death, and hear about the pushback by and on government around legislation in the works. There's all that and so much more below. First, today's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 91 Low: 76. Here are the top stories today in Raleigh: More than 24 hours after the fire at Wall Recycling Rowland Facility broke out, the fire continued to burn. The facility that produces recycled mulch caught fire on Tuesday, and didn't call for support until hours after it began. Because the fire ignited the mulch, it was very unpredictable for firefighters to put it out, and has continued to billow thick smoke into the sky into Wednesday. (abc11)The black bear that was found in a tree at Rex Hospital, was able to be coaxed down with the help of jelly donuts and sardines. The bear, nicknamed Rex, had mangled fur and was believed to have been hit by a car a few weeks back. The Raleigh Police Department saw Rex cross the street and tried to ensure he was able to escape safely. (WRAL)After passing amended standards for social studies teaching a few weeks back, the debate about Critical Race Theory and it's place in schools goes on. The General Assembly was set to discuss the topic last night. Some lawmakers want to limit how and what is taught in schools, and House Bill 324 would restrict how teachers are allowed to discuss race and sex in their class. The discussion took place at a Johnston County board meeting on Tuesday night, and dozens of protestors gathered at the meeting. (CBS17)Civil rights groups in North Carolina are speaking out against the legislation that cracks down on rioters. Advance Carolina and other groups believe that the House bill will have a negative effect on the people's First Amendment right to protest. The bill would add more serious felony charges, and allow for rioters to be held for up to 48 hours in jail. The bill passed the House 88-25 and is still pending in the Senate. (WNCT9)NC State's rare "corpse flower" is expected to bloom this year. The plant is one of the largest flowering structures in the plant kingdom at 60 lbs. and towering at 6 ft. tall. When the plant blooms it is said to smell of rotting flesh. The plant only blooms every 3-7 years and NC State is allowing a limited number of people to view the plant bloom.
