Description
Here are some key takeaways from CPAC:
120 - 40% of Native Americans were enslaved by other Native Americans - putting them on par with the ancient slave empires of Rome and Greece
2The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade took place from 1501 to 1875. During that time 12.7 million Africans were enslaved and transported to other parts of the world. Here's where they went:
• 45% went to Portugal
• 26% went to England
• 11% went to France
• 8% went to Spain
• 4% went to the Dutch
• 2.4% went to the United States
3. The second slave ship to arrive in America came in 1646. Do you know where it landed? Plymouth. Upon arrival, the colonists in Plymouth freed all the slaves on board and put the slave owners in jail.
4. The 1619 Project claims that the first slave ship to arrive in the colonies was in 1619. Technically that's not true. The people on that ship were indentured servants. In order words, someone paid for their passage to the Americans in exchange for a certain number of years of servitude before they were freed.
5. The first documented instance of slavery in the colonies happened in 1653. A man named Anthony Johnson had an indentured servant, and he argued to a court that his servant hadn't worked hard enough so he should become his slave for life. And the court agreed with him. Here's the twist... Anthony Johnson, the slave-owner was an African American.
Right now there are 40 million people enslaved around the world. Today. Not 200 years ago. If people like Nikole Hannah-Jones really cared about slavery, she would be focusing on telling that story - not re-writing American history.
