PELHAM MANOR, NY — Police are telling residents that there have been coyote sightings reported in the North and South ends of the village. Although coyotes are naturally afraid of humans and tend to avoid interacting with people, authorities are reminding the public of a few common sense rules of thumb to help keep pets, neighbors and the coyotes themselves safe. With a few simple precautions, man and man's (albeit wild) best friend should be able to coexist in peace. First and foremost, officials are warning the community to be mindful of children and pets while outdoors. Pets should not be allowed to run free and should either be leashed or in a fenced-in yard. The alert also admonishes homeowners to never feed coyotes. This includes inadvertently feeding the animals by giving them easy access to pet food, bird feeders, grease from barbecue grills or garbage cans left outdoors. The alert to the community posted on social media suggests Project Coyote as a resource for learning more about the four-legged neighbors who also call Pelham Manor home.
