Description
MALDEN, MA — The process of replacing lead service lines in Malden will be accelerated by a $3.36 million Community Project Funding request by U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark, which was included in the House Appropriations Committee budget for the 2022 fiscal year.
Malden has been identified as the community with the highest percentage of lead service lines in the greater Boston area, Clark's office said. The city has made strides to reduce the number of lead lines, but as of 2021, more than 2,000 remain.
The funding will allow Malden to replace both the public and private sides of lead service lines, removing a significant health hazard for low-income residents who cannot afford to replace them.
The congresswoman will tour the site of a lead service line on Wednesday.
