Western Springs Responders Save Man's Life: Village

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs paramedics and a police officer were credited with saving a construction worker's life in the spring, according to a village news release. The village employees were recently honored. On April 26, police and paramedics were called to a home under construction near Red Oak Drive and Timber Trails Boulevard, the village said. A worker was in full cardiac arrest on the first floor, the release said. Arriving first, Officer Kingsley Church performed CPR. The first responders then began advanced life support measures, including applying a cardiac monitor, according to the village. The man's pulse and breathing were restored after paramedics administered several shocks by the monitor, secured an airway for the worker to breathe and administered cardiac medications, the village said. The crew then moved the patient safely through the "hazardous" construction site to the ambulance, which took the man to the hospital, the village said. Honored for directly saving the man's life were Church and several members of the fire department, Capt. Charles Lichtenauer, Lt. Karl Hammond, Lt. Stephanie Grimm, paramedic Sean Yocum, firefighter Michael Darcy and firefighter Christopher Schneider. "This was a very challenging incident given the critical nature of the patient and the unsafe environment of the construction site," Fire Chief Mike Kelly said in a statement. "Thanks to the quick response and tremendous teamwork, skill and dedication of our firefighters/paramedics and police officer, they were able to save a life."
