LEMONT, IL — If you've paid a visit to the Lemont Township Community Center or the Heritage Woodland Sanctuary, you may have noticed the township's community garden. The garden supplies fresh vegetables to the Lemont's food pantries, township Facilities Director Kathy Henrikson said. The garden began several years ago, when the township partnered with former resident Ashley Vass to create the garden. Work even continued last year on the garden, as volunteers were able to safely distance outside. Henrikson said volunteers from the Lemont Garden Club and the township's open space committee help maintain the garden. "Each spring, we work the beds and plant," Henrikson said. "Once a month, we hold work days to weed." Every Monday, vegetables are picked and delivered to the local food pantry. Henrikson said lettuce, radishes, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, green beans, squash and fresh herbs have been given to the pantry so far this year. "We've been working on getting the garden in great shape to feature [it] at our Blooms & Blues Fest," Henrikson said. For more news and information like this, subscribe to the Lemont Patch for free.
