MANHATTAN BEACH, CA —Following a sewage discharge from the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in El Segundo, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is advising against swimming at the beach at 28th Street near Bruce's Beach.
Seventeen gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the ocean prompting the closure of a stretch of beaches in Los Angeles County, officials said Monday. A power outage at the Hyperion Treatment Plant spurred the sewage spill on Sunday night, according to L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn.
Based on recent water sampling conducted, DPH has determined that ocean water bacteria level exceeds State standards and may cause illness. Swimming is not advised.
The City of Manhattan Beach is monitoring developments and will inform the community as they become available from the County of Los Angeles.
