Free Concerts, Movies Set For In July At Norris University Center

EVANSTON, IL — Northwestern University is hosting free lunchtime concerts on Wednesdays and free movie screenings on Thursdays on campus for the rest of the month. Outdoor live music and movie screenings start this week on the east lawn of the Norris University Center at 1999 Campus Drive. Catered lunches will be available for purchase for $13.50 inside Norris during the concerts, while family-friendly gifts and activities will be on offer at each of the movies, organizers announced. The Lunch on the Lake live music series begins with the jazz group Chris Greene Quartet on July 14. The Summer Cinema series starts July 15. Attendees at a screening of the computer-animated movie "Soul" will receive free glowsticks. On July 21, the classical string duo Hannah Christiansen and Audrey Snyder, both graduates of Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory, will perform. Violinist Christiansen is a fellow with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and Snyder is the touring cellist for rock band The Who. On July 22, those who come to see the 2020 video game-based movie "Sonic the Hedgehog" will be offered free frozen treats. A set from DJ Jamfest is scheduled for July 28. And balloonist activities are planned for the July 29 screening of "The Croods: A New Age," the second in a series of computer-animated feature films. Wednesday concerts begin at noon and end at 1:15 p.m. Movies begin at dusk. Three outdoor lunchtime concerts and three evening movie screenings are planned this month for the east lawn at the Norris University Center in Evanston. (Google Maps)In the event of rain, concerts will take place on the ground floor of Norris, while film screenings will be moved to the building's first-floor auditorium and start at 8 p.m. Face masks are required for people who are not fully vaccinated. Organizers also recommend social distancing. Optional pre-registration provides a free purple blanket, according to the university. Registering to attend the concerts also gets you an entry into a drawing for one of five $15 vouchers to Mod Pizza, while registering to attend the movies gets you into a drawing for a $100 gift card to the Barnes and Noble on campus.
