ELMHURST, IL — In the last few days, Elmhurst police have handled cases involving a stolen flag, an offensive drawing, threats at a park, stolen equipment, suspicious people and a fugitive driver. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports: Flag stolen A 3-by-5 flag pinned to the outside wall of Dulles Cleaners, 128 N. Addison Ave., was stolen overnight Friday. The report did not indicate the type of flag. The theft happened three days after the shop's owner, John Dulles, was nearly kicked out of a City Council meeting when he refused to give up the microphone while speaking about parking problems on Addison Avenue. Dulles is also known for posting an anti-Chinese sign on his business late last year. He said it was against the Chinese government, not the people. Offensive drawing An offensive chalk drawing was reported on a sidewalk Sunday near Cottage Hill Avenue and Adelaide Street. The fire department responded and washed away the drawing. Neighborhood interviews were conducted, but no suspect was found. Patch has submitted a public records request for the full report. Threats at park A person told police that a man threatened him to stay away from his son at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Berens Park, 493 Oaklawn Ave. The victim's mother said she would contact the police if she is able to identify the suspect. The man was described as white, 40 years old, 6-foot-2 and having a muscular build. Equipment stolen A backpack leaf blower was stolen about 8:30 a.m. Thursday from an unsecured landscaping trailer in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue. The case is pending. Suspicious A man tried to open a person's work van at 8 a.m. Thursday at York Road Mart, 641 N. York St. The suspect left in a dark SUV. The man was described as black, wearing saggy pants and possibly missing teeth. The case is pending an investigation. A resident in the 300 block of Cottage Hill Avenue informed police he saw a man inside a neighbor's open garage about 4 p.m. Saturday. The man ran away south onto the Illinois Prairie Path. The man was described as Hispanic, 5-foot-7, 140 pounds, and wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans and a surgical mask. Street sign damage A man was seen causing damage to a pole while attempting to remove a street sign about 9 p.m. Thursday at Comstock and Garden. The man was described as white, 18 to 20 years old and having blond hair. He left in a gray pickup truck and was last seen headed north on Grand Avenue. Concerned about safety The McMaster-Carr plant told police about 1 p.m. Friday that it was concerned about the safety of employees. A suspect was reported missing in Port Orange, Florida, and was in possession of a gun. The suspect was later found by Port Orange police. No further threat was reported. Converter stolen A catalytic converter was stolen from a car overnight Thursday in a parking lot in the 100 block of West Butterfield Road. The metals in converters have become a lot more valuable since last year. Fugitive driver An officer saw a suspected stolen car about 10 p.m. Saturday at Thorntons gas station, 476 N. York St. When entering the car, the driver saw the officer and headed south on York. The officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the man sped away. In reviewing security footage, the officer saw that a second man was left behind when the first suspect drove away. Officers could not find the second suspect. The first suspect was described as black, 30 years old, having a thin build and dreadlocks, and wearing a black T-shirt, black pants, black gym shoes and a silver watch on his left wrist.
