Cobb County Public Safety Department Offers Citizens Academy

MARIETTA, GA — Local residents who have an interest in the inner-workings of the Cobb County Department of Public Safety are invited to participate in the agency's annual citizens' safety academy this fall. The 13-session academy provides residents with an inside look at various aspects of the Department of Public Safety. During the course, participants will be provided insight into various aspects of the department, including how the police, fire, animal services and 911 departments are organized and provide safety to Cobb County residents, department officials wrote in a social media post on Monday. Participants are asked to either live or work in Cobb County and must be at least 21 years of age. The academy will begin on Sept. 8 with the first session beginning at 6 p.m. at the Cobb County Public Safety Police Academy located at 2435 E. West Connector in Austell. Subsequent sessions will begin at 6:30 p.m. each week and will be held at various county agency buildings. Each session will take place on Wednesday evening and planned activities include visiting the 911 Communications Center, Animal Services facility as well as demonstrations on firearms safety and defensive tactics and classes with the fire department's heavy rescue squad and hazardous materials team. In order to participate, residents must be willing to undergo a background check and submit an application. The application can either be emailed to potential participants or picked up at the Cobb County Police Academy and will need to be dropped off at the Public Safety Internal Affairs Office located at 545 S. Fairground St. in Marietta. Applications are due by 3 p.m. on Sept. 1. Anyone seeking more information on the citizens' academy can call the Cobb County training center at (770) 499-4100.
