Aloha Gardens 2nd Annual 2021 Taro Harvest Mini-Fest. Choose from three "Hands-On" sessions. Session 4 is Dinner and Live Hawaiian music. 12 July 2021 Hampton, VA (Kalo Kountry) - Aloha Gardens presents the 2nd Annual 2021 Taro Harvest & Laulau Making Mini-Festival Event, the only public invited Taro Harvest activity in the continental US. This event brings together Polynesians, Hawaiians, and Hawaiians-at-Heart, and those who miss the islands and are familiar with Taro/Kalo and consumption of laulau. The Taro Harvest also acquaints those who are growing up here on the mainland, but are not familiar with Hawaiian Island culture, such as: knowing the Kalo (Haloa) Story, harvesting taro, knowing the difference between dry-land and wet-land (Lo'i) taro, making laulau, and connecting with our Hawaiian roots, culture, and traditions. There are three sessions to choose from for the "Hands-On Harvesting and the Making of Laulau". Each session can seat 30 participants - this accommodates COVID-19 Social Distancing practices. Regular tickets are for persons 13 years old and older. Children tickets are for 12 years and younger, for ONLY the meal during any of the four sessions. The session schedule follows: Session 1: July 30 (Friday Afternoon) - 2 pm to 5 pm = $48/Person Session 2: July 31 (Saturday Morning) - 9 am to 12 pm = $48/Person Session 3: July 31 (Saturday Afternoon) - 2 pm to 5 pm = $48/Person Session 4*: July 31 (Saturday Night) - 6 pm to 9 pm = $25/Person Or save by purchasing the: Session 3 & 4 Combo: 2 pm to 9 pm = $60/Person *Session 4 consist of the Laulau Dinner and Hawaiian Island Style PIHA Aloha Band Performance. You can purchase the Session 3 & 4 Combo ticket for $60/Person For all sessions: Check-In at the E Komo Mai (Welcome) table 30 minutes prior to the start of your session. Sessions 1-3 include the following activities: - Opening Ceremony - Story Telling of the significance of the Taro/Kalo to the Hawaiian People - Learn the parts of the Taro/Kalo and how the plant grows - Learn the Story of Haloa - Instruction to know how to harvest the Taro/Kalo (Luau) leaves - Hands on harvesting, cleaning, and preparing two laulaus using Banana and Ti Leaves, which you will take home with you and cook at your house. - Enjoy a laulau lunch/dinner plate of the pre-made laulau, served by our catering team, PIHA ALOHA. - Live Hawaiian Entertainment by our Special Appearance of Unko Charles Kealiealoha Smith Jr. Session 4: Includes the Laulau Plate dinner and the Hawaiian Island Style Entertainment by the PIHA ALOHA Band. There will be up to five Poly Vendors with merchandise for your benefit. As a participant, your purchase of a Session 1 - 3 event ticket will give you an event T-Shirt, the two laulaus you make, and a thermo bag to transport your laulau back home. Lastly, be sure to include the Adult T-Shirt sizes for each ticket holder, ticket you purchase. Aloha Gardens is dedicated to perpetuating the Hawaiian cultural through sustainable Kalo growing and educating the "Transplant Generation" (e.g., The younger generation growing up here on the mainland) about Taro growing and Lau Lau making. Through this effort, the "Transplant Generation" can embrace the Hawaiian culture - the importance of Kalo, know the Story of Haloa, and relate to the relatives still residing in the Hawaiian Islands. This event brings together Hawaiians and Hawaiians at heart, and those who miss the islands and are familiar with taro/kalo and lau lau. The Taro Harvest also acquaints those who are growing up here on the mainland, but are not familiar with Hawaiian island roots, culture, and traditions.
