Description
The Healthy Family, Healthy Heart food drive attempts to address this problem by exposing families of color to heart-healthy food options. In conjunction with The Watered Roots, a Maryland nonprofit, The Right Kind of Black Girl (a California nonprofit) is hosting a food drive called Healthy Family, Healthy Heart on Saturday September 25, 2021. We are also partnering with engineers from the National Society of Black Engineers (Region VI Professionals) to provide free STEM activities to children in attendance. The purpose of this food drive is to expose Los Angeles families of color, especially Black and Latino families, to heart-healthy food options. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Some of the risk factors for heart disease include hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol. As you may know, Black, Latino, and Asian folks tend to be at greater risk for such risk factors, and therefore at greater risk of premature death from heart disease. Part of the problem is the financial and geographical accessibility of hyperpalatable, nutrient-lacking foods in communities of color. The Healthy Family, Healthy Heart food drive attempts to address this problem by exposing families of color to heart-healthy food options. We hope to give 50 FREE bags of heart-healthy food to families in attendance. Funds permitted, we will give more! If you would like to make a donation, please do so here indicating that it is for the Healthy Family, Healthy Heart event. TRKBG is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by Shambria Williams. We cultivate sisterhood by empowering women and girls of the African diaspora to lead, innovate and serve our communities. We aim to create social systems free of gender, economic and racial barriers. Our members leverage this community by collaborating with allies to improve the lives of other Black women and girls. In essence, we help Black girls get free! Check out our website at www.therightkindofblackgirl.org
