Description
Westwood resident Paula González Barreto is holding a bakesale to benefit The Borgen Project. González Barreto, who interns at the nonprofit, will be selling vanilla-frosted pound cakes for $10 each. They will be delivered between July 14 and 18, 2021. González Barreto is currently studying Law and International Relations at Madrid's IE University. At the age of fifteen, she moved from her native Puerto Rico to Switzerland due to her mother's work. While a student at the International School of Zug and Luzern, she went on a volunteer trip to Ghana. "Working with Kokrobite Chiltern Centre got me in contact with non-governmental organizations (NGO's). My team and I learned how to do construction with PET bottles. This experience cemented that I wanted to work in International Relations, and led to my attending IE University," says González Barreto. Her parents recently moved to Westwood, and she resides with them for university breaks. Being in Westwood enabled her to find the Political Affairs Internship at The Borgen Project. Her internship's focus is development. As an unpaid intern at The Borgen Project, she is required to raise $500, but González Barreto emphasizes that the effort is for interns to mobilize people. Her work at The Borgen Project benefits the "bottom billion," the billion poorest people on Earth who live on less than $1.90 USD per day. González Barreto touts work in making COVID-19 vaccines accessible worldwide. Other foreign policy work includes support for the Girls LEAD Act, which would encourage civic participation by teenage girls. The final piece of policy work she mentions is the Reach Every Mother and Child Act, which seeks to improve maternal and early childhood health outcomes. To order one of González Barreto's 8x4in "vanilla frosted pound-cakes" for $10, send her a text message at (339) 213-2583 or via Facebook Messenger. Although her promotional materials state that the cakes will be delivered from July 14th to 17th, she says it will be extended to the 19th or 20th.
