STONEHAM, MA — The town recently took a major step toward getting a new state-of-the-art high school. The Stoneham School Building Committee voted in a June 21 meeting to approve the ambitious project and authorize the schematic design submission to the Massachusetts School Building Authority. The step is one of many on the long, multi-layered road ahead. The proposed new Stoneham High School would have a pre-K learning center, turf athletic fields, walking paths, a 600-seat auditorium and more, according to designs. There would also be maker spaces, collaboration areas and a Community Presentation space along with the usual classrooms, cafeteria and gymnasium. The goal is to have a place students and community members can all benefit from. The building will also be energy efficient. You can see design plans below. The next step in the process is the Massachusetts School Building Authority Board of Directors taking up the submission at an Aug. 25 meeting. Residents will then vote to appropriate funding at Oct. 4 Town Meeting and vote on a debt exclusion Nov. 2. Related: When was the last time you were inside Stoneham High School?
