This class will give you practice the skills to add a bowtie/butterfly as decoration, cover up a mistake, or stabilize a crack in wood.
Wether you want to get practice using chisels, add a bowtie/butterfly spline as decoration, cover up a mistake, or as a method to prevent the wood from further splitting (see event photo)- this class will give you hands on experience along with tips and tricks to make the tightest fitting bowtie splines/keys that you're capable of. This class will also go through the basics of using chisels to drive precise, clean looking results.
During this class, we will talk through the process of creating the actual butterfly key, and give you the hands on practice of tracing the key onto your piece, routing out the bulk of the mortise, and how to best clean up the shoulders to give you that nice tight fit around the butterfly. We'll also cover all the ways to fix those little mistakes that tend to happen.
You'll walk away with a piece of wood that you can later develop into a cutting board or use in another project.
