NEWARK, NJ — Newark's only drive-in movie theater has good news: it's officially returning for summer 2021. According to a social media update from Moonlight Cinema, it will be reopening for the season on Saturday, July 24 – its first anniversary. Tickets go on sale Thursday. Learn more here. The Moonlight Cinema, owned by Siree Morris and Ayana Stafford-Morris, made big waves last year when it launched amid the coronavirus pandemic, giving people some much-needed escape and entertainment. It was the first time that New Jersey's largest city has seen a drive-in theater since the late 1980s – a rarity in its own regard. But the theater, which spotlights the work of Black-owned creators and has given jobs to local teens and young people, also endeared itself to Newark in many other ways before closing for the season.
