Lawrence Twp. Named 2020 Tree City USA By Arbor Day Foundation

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — Arbor Day Foundation has named Lawrence Township a 2020 Tree City USA, officials said. It is the township's 25th year participating in the program. The township was recognized for its commitment to effective urban forest management. Lawrence achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements - a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Mayor James Kownacki said the township was "extremely proud" to successful participants in the program. "Preserving the character and nature of our community by having an effective tree management program is a responsibility that we take seriously, and will continue for years to come," Kownacki said in a media statement. Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation said the township was ensuring that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life. "Additionally, participation in this program brings residents together and creates a sense of civic pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education," Lambe said. Apart from Lawrence Township, neighboring East Windsor too was named a 2020 Tree City USA community in April this year. The Arbor Day Foundation recently launched the Time for Trees initiative to address environmental issues, with a goal of planting 100 million trees in forests and communities and inspiring 5 million tree planters by 2022.
