Press release from Culinary Angels: Culinary Angels, an almost entirely volunteer based non-profit that serves nutrient-rich meals to those going through cancer treatment and others facing serious health challenges is recruiting for a new volunteer class. The organization delivers, at no cost to the Tri-Valley cities of Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, San Ramon, and Danville. Adults 16 and over are invited to help us in the effort to prepare mostly organic meals for people undergoing a serious health challenge. Meals are also provided to the caregivers of patients. Anyone, at any age or income level, who is going through a serious health challenge, is eligible for meals from Culinary Angels. Those interested in receiving meals from Culinary Angels can do so by visiting the website at www.culinaryangels.org. "Our volunteers are the heart of our organization," according to Culinary Angels Executive Director Lisa McNaney. "They work tirelessly on behalf of our neighbors who are ill and/or undergoing treatment for a serious illness," she added. High school students seeking community service hours and adults are all welcome to prep, cook, and package meals, and wash dishes. Volunteers work on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All volunteers are required to pass an online state accredited course on food handling and safety. The kitchen is located at 3701 Nevada Street in Pleasanton. Culinary Angels has prepared and delivered more than 6,000 nutritious meals to local East Bay patients since its inception in 2016. Approximately 95% of the organization's recipients are actively undergoing treatment for cancer, and the program is open to those facing other medical challenges as well. The meals prepared by Culinary Angels are delicious, robust and ample----often providing multiple meals for patients and/or their caregivers. A typical menu could include Fresh Pea Soup, Chicken Tacos, Simple Crunchy Slaw, Herbed Rice, and Energy Bites for dessert. The Healthy Alameda County Report of 2016 revealed that 6.2% of Pleasanton adults and 6% of Livermore adults 18 years and over has some type of cancer other than skin cancer. Dublin's cancer data was not included in the report. Cancer is also the second highest leading cause of death in Contra Costa County after heart disease. Cancer research indicates that roughly one-fifth of all cancers in the United States are linked to excess weight, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, or excessive alcohol consumption. For this reason, Culinary Angels is focused not only on feeding patients nutritious, organic, anti-oxidant based meals, but also on educating their clients about such foods. All of the recipes used in meals are posted on the Culinary Angels website for clients to share with family and/or caregivers, or to try for themselves.
