Bibb County To Cast Ballots In Senate Special Election Tuesday

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Voters in Bibb County, along with neighbors in Shelby and Chilton counties, will take to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in the special general election for Alabama Senate District 14. The election will see Republican April Weaver, who won a three-person primary in March to secure the GOP nod on the ticket, face off against Democrat Virginia Applebaum. A political newcomer who has never held elected office, Applebaum was uncontested for the Democratic nomination. The winner will fill the senate seat left vacant by Republican Cam Ward of Alabaster, who was appointed director of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles by Gov. Kay Ivey. Click here to subscribe to our free Tuscaloosa Daily newsletter and breaking news alerts Weaver previously served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 2010 to 2020 — representing Shelby, Bibb and Chilton counties — and was later appointed by President Donald Trump as a regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. At one point during her decade in the House of Representatives, she chaired the House Health Committee. In the March Republican Primary, Weaver won easily with 82% of the vote. Applebaum is a Calera native and attorney who practices in Birmingham and the surrounding area. She has a Masters Degree from Jacksonville State University and went on to graduate from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. She has been practicing law since 2006, achieving notoriety and receiving recognition from a variety of Birmingham publications for her work in the legal sector. Applebaum also chairs the Native American Caucus of the State Democratic Executive Committee.
