Pirates Take Catcher Henry Davis With 1st Pick In MLB Draft

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pirates chose Louisville catcher Henry Davis with the initial pick in Major League Baseball's amateur draft. The selection was somewhat surprising, as most mock drafts had the Bucs selecting high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer with the first selection. Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the pick Sunday from Denver, the site of baseball's All-Star Game on Tuesday. Davis hit .370 and led Louisville with 15 homers during the recent college season. He also threw out 46 percent of runners attempting to steal. The Pirates had baseball's first overall pick since 2011, when they selected pitcher Gerrit Cole. The other players the team has selected with the top picks were infielder Jeff King in 1986, pitcher Kris Benson in 1996 and pitcher Bryan Bullington in 2002. We got him!
