First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 106 Low: 61. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: Restaurant owners are getting frustrated with the difficulty in hiring labor. A Folsom restauranteur went as far as blaming the federal government for the problems in a sign addressed to customers. Local economic leaders agree that, until unemployment assistance returns to pre-pandemic levels, some labor will be difficult to entice to return. (CBS Sacramento)A five-year-old narrowly missed being the victim of a random drive-by shooting on Highway 50 near Stockton Blvd. The bullet missed his head by inches as it was stopped by the cupholder in the armrest folded into the backseat next to his head. His mother's car was hit by three random bullets, but everyone survived without injury. Police are investigating. (CBS Sacramento) Power is back on after hundreds of residents in West Sacramento experienced an outage on Friday. PG&E says the outage was due to "extreme weather" which is exactly the reason these folks needed their power so badly! (FOX40)The Tower Café is reopening! This Sacramento landmark has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic. The restaurant is reopening on Monday July 12th, but is not taking reservations at this time. It will be opening short staffed, so expect a wait! (ABC10)Our temps have been in triple digits for several days and near record highs. This heatwave can be dangerous, especially for children and the elderly. Sacramento doctors weigh in on the risks and how you can mitigate them. (KCRA3) Sunday's events in Sacramento The Sacramento Antique Faire is debuting its new location! Come out and check out hundreds of antiques & collectibles vendors in the spacious digs at Sleep Train Arena. (6:30 am)Come enjoy ocean-themed activities at Oak Meadow Park past the playground. Bring a change of clothes, snack, water, and a blanket to sit on if you'd like. Please wear your masks if able. $20 per family. Kids 0-5ish. (9 am)To close out the Mermaid Convention, please join then for the Promenade Of The Mermaids. Dress in your best mermaid, pirate or nautical attire and parade with them through the streets of Old Sacramento. You can also join them afterward for a river cleanup event. (11 am)Pretty much nothing is going to grow in this heat - except a succulent! Join the folks at Device Brewing for a Succulent Terrarium Party where you will build your own terrarium garden. (2 pm)Celebrate music with this event that benefits the Mandarins Music Center for music education. There will be local musicians and mouthwatering food, as well as the inaugural performance from the Mandarin Drum and Bugle Corps. (5 pm) Sacramento Patch Notebook Beat the heat by spending a day out and in at the same time at some of the amazing museums around Sacramento. Learn about the original Chinese settlers in Locke. Go underground in Old Sacramento or don an engineer's cap and pretend to ride the rails at the Railroad Museum. There's so much to do you'll forget it's 110 degrees outside! Lest you think the dueling pens of the media today are at their sharpest, see what journalism was like in Sacramento during the Civil War. While we did not see battles on the battlefield, they raged strong in the newspapers in the region and with their editors, with the editor of one Grass Valley newspaper physically assaulting a rival editor.
