Family Dog Rescued From Blaze At Gwinnett County Home

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Gwinnett County firefighters, who fought a house fire in Lilburn Thursday afternoon, weren't able to save the house — but they did rescue the dog inside. Crews arrived to find a "working fire with heavy dark smoke showing" from the back of a split-level on Lester Woods Court in Lilburn, according to a news release from Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services. The 911 caller who reported the fire told the operator the house was unoccupied, except for the family dog. While two units brought the blaze under control, firefighters searched the house and found the dog. Once outside, according to the release, firefighters used a specially designed pet oxygen mask to help with the dog's recovery. Investigators later determined the fire was accidental, starting on the back deck and spreading into the home. The four human residents of the house — two adults and two children — were not home at the time of the fire. The American Red Cross was asked to help the family.
