Legal Issues for Personal Protection Thursday, August 12th, 2021 7:00 p.m. til 9:30 p.m. DoubleTree Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Park US-280 at I-459 Your personal training to carry or use a firearm for self-defense should include an understanding of the legal issues involved, and how to deal with the aftermath of a justifiable use of force to defend yourself or your family! Alabama Firearms Training Services, LLC is happy to present this class for students who wish to learn more about the legal issues related to owning, carrying, and using a firearm for self-defense. This class is taught by local attorneys from the Birmingham area, with both criminal defense and prosecution experience. It focuses on the basics of justifiable use of lethal force for self-defense, as well as the law in Alabama that governs carrying handgun. The Law We will begin the class with a lecture session by Michael Whisonant, Jr. on the laws governing the purchase, ownership, and carrying of a firearm in AL. Then Michael will educate us on the laws governing self defense in Alabama and the practical implications for armed citizens. The Process Next, our expert instructors drawn from criminal defense, prosecution, and law enforcement will perform a short role play for the class. It starts with a homeowner’s lethal force self-defense response to a home invasion. We follow their subsequent interactions with the 911 operator, and with responding law enforcement officers. The next day we follow the homeowner’s interaction with police investigators during questioning after the incident, and finally the presentation of this case to the grand jury by the prosecutor. Your Questions At the end of our lecture session and the role play you have watched, our panel of expert instructors will be available for a question and answer period to help you understand everything we have discussed and the scenario that just played out for you. Duration of this class is 2.5 hours including a short 10 minute mid-class break, plus ample time to answer student questions.
