2 Novato Catalytic Converter Theft Suspects Arrested

NOVATO, CA — Two Central Valley men were arrested early Tuesday morning in connection with a catalytic converter theft, the Novato Police Department said. Luis Vargas, 31, and 38-year-old Moses Santo (both of Sacramento), were arrested on suspicion of grand theft and tampering with a vehicle, among other charges, police said. Officers at around 2:40 a.m. responded to Hollyleaf Way to a report of a catalytic converter theft in progress, police said. Officers stopped the suspect vehicle near the gas station on Enfrente Road according to police. Novato along with many other Bay Area communities has seen a rise in catalytic converters thefts in recent months according to police. Hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius that have two power sources are among the most often targeted for catalytic converter theft, police said. The height of these vehicles also makes it relatively easy for thieves to access exhaust systems located underneath vehicles. "Thieves look for easy targets when it comes to catalytic converter theft as they are looking for a quick removal," police said in a statement.
