TUSCALOOSA, AL — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey recently appointed Tuscaloosa native Brian Butler to serve on the USS Alabama Battleship Commission. Butler recently retired from the City of Tuscaloosa after 27 years, where he served as chief human resources officer. His term on the statewide commission will run through November 2023. He retired from the Navy in June 2020 after 30 years of service. A lifelong Tuscaloosa resident and graduate of Central High School, Butler currently leads the Public Administration Practice Group and serves as senior HR consultant for Cobbs Allen "As a retired Navy captain, it is an honor to be a part of the history of this great battleship," Butler told Patch on Friday. "The USS Alabama served honorably in World War II and is a memorial to millions of men and women who fought for our great country. As a commissioner, I am looking forward to serving and helping others remember their sacrifices." The USS Alabama Battleship Commission was formed in 1963 by the Alabama Legislature, with the purpose of overseeing the management of Battleship Memorial Park.
