City Officials Warn Drivers About Upcoming Traffic Hassles

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — At times, it might seem as if there is roadwork taking place on every road in the city, but this can't possibly be true, because even more major construction projects are on the way. City officials say traffic congestion is anticipated as a number of infrastructure improvement projects get underway in the coming weeks. The utility, sewer and roadway upgrades will eventually make life easier for all of us, but for the time being, getting around town certainly won't be any easier. North Avenue Bridge The New York State Thruway Authority has plans to replace the North Avenue Bridge over I-95. The first phase of the project requires utility relocation, which will cause traffic to be reduced to one lane in either direction between Huguenot Street and Lockwood Avenue in the upcoming weeks. Burling Lane will be closed to through traffic at North Avenue and access to I-95 from North Avenue southbound will be detoured through Memorial Highway. Hutchinson Parkway The New York State Department of Transportation is replacing the exit signs on the Hutchinson River Parkway from the Bronx to the Connecticut border. Exit numbers are being changed from sequential to mile-based exits. Repaving The Department of Public Works is still finalizing a paving list for 2021. Affected neighborhoods will be alerted before work begins. The contractor has begun the preparation (pedestrian ramp installations, casting adjustment) on the streets that were not completed last year. The city webpage www.newrochelleny.com/paving will have the latest updates. Utility Work Suez will be upgrading and enlarging water supply lines. Trunk lines are already being replaced along Webster Avenue and Main Street. Con Edison is converting gas lines throughout New Rochelle from low to high pressure service. Sewer system enhancements are being undertaken to address age and capacity issues and to keep the stormwater system free of pollutants that can contaminate waterways. City officials say some projects are short-term, while others will be longer in duration. If there is an impact on service delivery, Con Ed and Suez will contact customers directly.
