PALMETTO, FL — A 68-year-old inmate died at Manatee County Jail in Palmetto Tuesday morning, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Gavino DeLeon was found unresponsive in his bed in a medical pod around 8:15 a.m. Jail staff performed life-saving measures on him, but he didn't have a pulse and was pronounced dead from what was appeared to be a medical event, the sheriff's office said. Detectives said there were no signs of trauma or foul play. DeLeon had various medical conditions, the sheriff's office said. DeLeon had been in Manatee County Jail since July 19, 2019 and was awaiting trial on multiple sex charges, MCSO said.
