Description

RICHFIELD, MN — Construction on the "Interstate 494: Airport to Highway 169" project, which is estimated to cost more than $200 million, is set to begin sometime between 2022 and 2023. Included in the large project will be a directional ramp for northbound Interstate 35W to westbound I-494 traffic. MnPASS lanes will also be added to that stretch of I-494. Few other specifics about the project have been released, but its aims include reducing rush hour traffic and improve highway safety. Other aims include: Provide a transit advantage to increase the number of people who can be efficiently moved through the areaImprove safetyRestore pavement to preserve infrastructure and provide a smoother rideImprove drainage systems to reduce localized flooding and reduce run-off into the Minnesota RiverPreserve existing bridgeThe project is being funded by a grant from the state's "Corridors of Commerce" program.
