I totally agree with these guys saying that the people CALLING people flakes are the real problem.
Joined a project that was TOTALLY misrepresented when I auditioned, turned out the band leader wanted to go off in his own VERY WEIRD direction that no one understood or was behind, but he listed the band as a blues band. Told him I wasn't his guy and walked....and he became the guy on FB (using a fake address) to trash me as a flake who left the band in a hole.
I played every show on the calendar I was informed of, even though it wasn't my thing and I knew I was headed for the door on my own. I played to the best of my ability. I talked it through with said band leader before leaving, but he showed no signs of wanting to change direction. So I left stating that if I couldn't get behind his vision, he was better off finding someone who could because that type of thing shows through to the audience.
So is the flake the guy who worked hard to learn the material, play every show, and was up front about things, or the dude who had to hide behind a fake address and talk shit?
This is why the idea of a "flake list" is a terrible one. The flake is usually the guy putting people on the list.
