Seeking Elmers

I live in Desert Hot Springs and I'm looking to get into the Ham (or amateur radio) hobby. I'm hoping to find an "Elmer" up here that can point me in the right direction. Are there any amateur radio groups out here that would or could welcome a complete novice (newb) and help me out in getting my amateur radio license? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
