This training is intended for mental health professionals who work with Veterans and/ or their family members. The Maine Safer Homes Taskforce (MSHT) will be hosting a training event for mental health professionals who work with Veterans and/ or their families. The purpose of this event will be to help professionals better understand military culture and why firearms play an important role to Veterans. Instructional topics will include a paneled event with four Veterans, peer-to-peer mentoring, and role-playing. From these exercises and scenarios, the goal is to discuss the importance of Veteran safety plans that involve a system of supports that includes their family and friends. The second part of the training will be more hands-on; certified NRA instructors will do an Introduction to Firearms Safety. This will be done by Craig Gerry, NRA Certified Instructor: & Greg McNeal, Marine Corps Ret. & Sportsman's Alliance of Maine Veterans' Liaison. The purpose of this part of the program will be to provide firearms safety training as well as hands-on experience with guns as well as how to put safety locks on guns.
