Description

As Black men, women, and kids are gunned down in Rochester, NY the community seeks answers, but "what is the root cause??" of gun violence. In Rochester, NY last year there were 52 homicides (mostly Black victims). This was chalked up mainly by elected officials as simply being a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, however, those who have been on the "front lines" know that gun violence has ALWAYS been an issue for our city. In the last ten years Rochester has averaged 33 homicides per year(mostly Black victims). This year (2021) alone we have had 200+ men, women, and children shot with 38 of those victims dying from their injuries. Rochester is projected to see 70 homicides for 2021. Just yesterday (7/7/2021) the FEDS announced that for the next 60 days they will be implementing the VIPER taskforce to try to curb gun violence. However, many concerned citizens feel that more police is not the answer. Most activists agree that gun violence can be reduced by community intervention. But despite the collective "work" by a few groups operating in many silos: Black Death continues to rise. As a social worker Mr. Miquel Powell tend to agree that the community can affect change in regards to gun violence, however, that can only be done in a significant way only if we all understand what is causing the gun violence in the first place. The first step to any solution is to IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. And if you ask 100 people what is causing gun violence you would probably get 100 different answers. On July 30th, please join us for our part 1 community discussion: Gun Violence "What is the Root Cause??". Please RSVP. Free Food. Guest Speakers. This community event is presented by The Reentry & Community Development Center. It has been planned by Miquel Powell, BSW, volunteers, and other community activists.
