Saxonville Flood Gate Mural Project Seeking Donations

FRAMINGHAM, MA — The groups Sax Art, Friends of Saxonville and the Framingham Cultural Council want to spruce up two dull flood gates along Concord Road, but they need help funding the project. The groups are funding artists to paint murals on either side of Concord Road over the Sudbury River. The bridge there is flanked on either side by the long, gray gates that are about 250 square-feet each. The groups are trying to raise a modest $5,000 by Aug. 1. The project will cost about $10,000 total, but Friends of Saxonville and the Framingham Cultural Council have each already donated $2,500 to the project. According to the project's Kickstarter page, the murals would beautify the area, but also create an opportunity for local artists to show off their work. "The theme of these murals is an artistic interpretation of the Sudbury River's importance to Saxonville's founding and emergence as an industrial mill hub for Framingham," the fundraiser page says. The groups hope to announce the artists chosen to paint the murals by July 9, and the murals could be complete by Aug. 31. Find out more on the fundraiser page.
