100 Tickets Issued In July 4 Traffic Campaign In Lake Co.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Sheriff's Office was out in full force in the weeks leading up to the Fourth of July holiday weekend with officers making several arrests for driving while under the influence as well as citing dozens of drivers for speeding and seatbelt violations. The sheriff's office arrested five people for driving while under the influence and arrested two people for unlawfully possessing firearms. In addition, police issued 48 seatbelt citations and 52 speeding tickets. Officers arrested three more people on warrants and cited four for driving while their license was suspended. The traffic campaign took place between June 17 and July 6. Meanwhile, the sheriff's office responded to dozens of fireworks complaints over the holiday weekend but there were no reports of anyone being injured while setting off fireworks, Lake County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli told Patch in an email response. There were no major crashes, Covelli said. The Lake County Sheriff's Office joined forces with more than 200 other local law enforcement agencies to take part in the campaign. The enforcement period was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Click It or Ticket" programs.
