BIRMINGHAM, AL — A Birmingham police officer has been arrested and charged with sexual assault, among other offenses. Officer Matthew Wilcox is accused of sexual intercourse with a person who was incapacitated and unable to consent. Chief Patrick Smith said in a news conference Tuesday that a complaint was issued Friday, and Birmingham Police Special Victims' Unit along with Internal Affairs began an investigation. A search of the officer's home uncovered illegal narcotics, multiple firearms and drug paraphernalia, Smith said. Following questioning, Wilcox was arrested and charged with first-degree rape, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. "We know that this was done through the use of very popular dating websites," Smith said. "It has been brought to our attention that on different occasions, Officer Wilcox has used at least two very popular dating websites. He has also met with multiple women on those sites." Wilcox resigned Tuesday, and is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on $25,000 bond.
