Join one of four walking tours to learn how Sylvester Manor is stewarding the 235-acre property for a more sustainable future. This year, we are offering four different walking tours focusing on Sustainability at Sylvester Manor. All tours are 45 minutes and will be on unpaved, dirt trails. Please wear appropriate footwear. Insect and tick repellent is suggested. Recommended for ages 12+. June 15: TREES OF THE MANOR: HISTORIC, SPECIMEN, NATIVE, INVASIVE Tour the Manor core landscape and hear about a spectrum of interesting, unique, or troublesome, tree species that have been introduced over the generations or come with the territory. Meet at the Manor House. July 6: STEWARDING THE LANDSCAPE: WORKING WITH NATURE Dive into the diverse environment of the 235-acre site, and explore how we are thinking about and working with groundwater, rising seas, woodlands and farm fields to help build ecosystem health and services. Meet at the Manor House. August 17: COMPOSTING AND SOIL HEALTH Visit the farm fields to learn about ways Sylvester Manor is working with Island partners to manage nutrients, rebuild the health of the soils and cycle waste matter to boost food production and carbon sequestration. Meet at the Windmill Field Farmstand, 21 Manwaring Road. September 21 : ADAPTIVE REUSE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT From constructed wetlands for treating wastewater, to restoring the 1737 Manor House and the 1810 Windmill, we'll look at ways we're building, rebuilding and planning for a Sylvester Manor campus that reflects the history of human habitation here, and builds a better future for all. Meet at the Manor House. All CDC and Department of Health COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. Sylvester Manor, Shelter Island’s 1652 homestead, has embarked on a new era as a nonprofit organic farm, historic plantation and vibrant arts and education center, with programs open to all. Our mission is we PRESERVE, CULTIVATE, and SHARE the history of Sylvester Manor to ensure that food and art remain connected to community and the land.
