Hazardous Lake Swimming Conditions Will Persist Until Wednesday

OAK CREEK, WI — City officials and the National Weather Service are warning against swimming in Lake Michigan due to hazardous surf conditions. The warning is primarily for Tuesday and will end Wednesday. Beaches along Ozaukee, Milwaukee, and Racine County will have life threatening waves and dangerous currents as winds increase from north to northeast, according to the National Weather Service statement. The onshore winds and high waves can be hazardous. The weather service is telling people to stay out of the water and away from dangerous areas such as piers and breakwalls. Strong longshore currents are expected and rip currents are expected. All beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Southeastern Wisconsin are included in the warning, but McKinley Beach and Grant Park Beach in Milwaukee, and North Beach in Racine are especially dangerous. Local officials have reiterated the National Weather Service warning. The Oak Creek Health Department said on Facebook that today would be a great day to stay away from the lake by using the Drexel Town Square splash pad. The Oak Creek Fire Department also posted on Facebook to "stay out of the water today." The warnings come amidst a warm start to the week with highs in the 80s and 90s, but the temperature is forecasted to drop into the 70 degree range in the second half of this week. Three minors have died at Racine beaches in the past month due to drowning or similar injuries.
