Description

In keeping with the tradition of providing basic needs for our Veterans, this event includes hot food, Veteran resources & free giveaways! Originally modeled after the concept used during the Vietnam War, the original Stand Down for homeless Veterans provided a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. At the secure base camp, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, and receive medical and dental care. The area also served as a safe haven for soldiers returning from battle to enjoy other soldiers and uplift their spirits. In July 2002, Robert Van Keuren, Dr. Jon Nachison, and Vietnam Veterans of San Diego, continued that original concept and founded “Stand Down,” which provides a wide range of support services and resources within the community for homeless Veterans. Now recognized as the most valuable outreach tool in assisting homeless Veterans in the Nation today, this event is held each year to support Vets and provide access to community resources and supplies—enabling them on the road of rebuilding their lives. * Please note: If you are experiencing cold/flu-like symptoms on the day of this event, for the safety of others, please do not attend. Thank you. *In case of inclement weather on September 3rd, this event will be held on September 10th.
