BURLINGTON, MA — Thomas Browne has started his role as chief of police following a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday at Grand View Farm. "It is a great honor, and great responsibility, to lead the Burlington Police Department," Browne said in a release. "The Department has become a model of 21st-century law enforcement, and reflective of the values and ideals of Burlington. We will focus on further building the trust between residents and Department, and look forward to continuing to collaborate with our residents and organizations in our community." Browne takes over for Chief Michael Kent, who retired Thursday. Browne worked in multiple New Hampshire police departments before arriving in Burlington in 2001. He became a lieutenant in 2012 and deputy chief in 2018. Under his watch as accreditation manager, the department was certified Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission for the first time since 2003. The Burlington native graduated from the high school in 1990. He and his wife, Michelle, have three daughters. Two of Browne's brothers are members of the Burlington Fire Department, while another brother recently retired from the fire department.
