Description

Food for Thought: Overview of Second Harvest Food Bank's Child Nutrition Programs Almost 150,000 people in the Big Bend, including 31,000 children, lack regular access to healthy, nutritious food. Second Harvest food bank's popular "Food for Thought" lunch & learn tours resume on July 25 with a free presentation about the food bank's child nutrition programs, including our summer feeding programs, and will provide an opportunity to engage with the public about food insecurity issues in the Big Bend. The one-hour Food for Thought tours accommodate 15 participants, and include an information session to learn more about who is hungry in our community, a walking tour of the food bank to see how it operates, and a complimentary lunch provided by Chicken Salad Chick. Individuals and groups are welcomed, and tour dates are available here. “Many people are surprised to learn that the Big Bend has Florida’s highest food insecurity rate, and that four of Florida’s top five hungriest counties are located here,” said Shari Hubbard, APR, director of communications for Second Harvest. “We’ve made significant progress in the fight against hunger during the past several years, but there is more work to be done. We welcome everyone who wants to learn more about how Second Harvest food bank work--together with our 135 partner agencies in 11 counties--to help address the 16.7 million annual meal gap in the Big Bend,” she added. Interested individuals and groups must register to participate in a Food for Thought tour, and should RSVP to Shari Hubbard at [email protected], or by calling 562-3033, ext. 211.
