Over 1.3 million outdoor enthusiasts make the journey from Denver to Vail every year. Some are Denver residents who head to Vail for the powder skiing or amazing mountain biking (depending on seasons of course). Some are travelers from countries far away. All are looking forward to having a great time in Vail, and few probably realize that there is some considerable peril involved in getting to Vail. How to Get to Vail? There are two approaches to transportation in Vail; from the East and from the West. North and South are covered with impassable mountain terrain, so your only choices are either driving in from Denver or from Eagle. Both Denver and Eagle have airports making them ideal entry points for traveling to Vail. Denver International Airport Denver International Airport (DIA) is one of the busiest airports in the United States. It’s the central hub for all Frontier Airlines routes and serves millions of travelers every year. In fact, it is the largest airport by surface area in all of North America, and 2nd largest in the world. Flying into and out of Vail doesn’t appear to be any more dangerous than any other major airport, but travelers going from Denver to Vail are now faced with another worrying obstacle: the road from Denver to Vail. This section of I70 which winds its way into the Rockies is subject to extreme elevation drops and ascends as well as very icy conditions during the Winter months. Once in the town itself, Vail transportation options such as the intown bus system are easy to use and convenient, it's getting to Vail that can prove to be an issue for the unexperienced driver. The Vail Pass is the highest elevation point on the journey from Denver to Vail, and this section of the road is frequently closed by local authorities due to extremely hazardous blizzard conditions which make it impossible for motorists to safely navigate. In fact, driving from Denver to Vail has just been featured in the world’s most dangerous roads website: https://www.dangerousroads.org/north-america/usa/10961-driving-from-denver-to-vail.html Eagle Airport Eagle Regional Airport (EGE) is a smaller sized airport that is quickly growing into a serious contender for the most convenient route for getting into Vail and the rest of the Rocky Mountains. This airport has gained some notable notoriety recently when it was featured on the History Channel’s “America’s 10 Scariest Airports”. Bad weather conditions, difficult terrain and high elevation were the main factors the producers of the show and pilots interviewed complained about. Luckily, Eagle County has been investing massive amounts of money into the airport over the last few years, including a new airport traffic controller tower, an instrument landing system (ILS) and a new BI-6 radar system, which all help to make take-off and landing much safer even in poor weather conditions. Still, many people are understandably worried about flying into Eagle Airport considering the last crash there was as recent as 2015. Is it safe to travel to Vail? Yes, of course it’s safe to travel to Vail. Millions of people do so each year. If you’re flying into either Eagle or Denver Airport, consider using a private Vail transportation service such as Blue Sky Limo | Vail Airport Shuttle to get to Vail. Usually these companies employ only local residents who are very familiar with the terrain and weather dependent road conditions. If you’re driving your own vehicle, make sure it has been recently serviced and has good functioning breaks. Above all, just be a bit more careful especially in the Winter months, and you’ll be absolutely fine going to Vail.
