ARVADA, CO — The public is invited to pay their respects to a man who gave his life to stop an active shooter in Arvada, authorities said. A memorial service is set to be held July 20 for Samaritan Johnny Hurley, who shot the man who killed Arvada officer Gordon Beesley. The service, which is being organized by Hurley's family, will begin at noon at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd. "We will be having a traditional memorial service to honor the life of our dear Johnny," the family said in a Facebook event post. "It is open to the public and we ask that you dress accordingly. If you are unable to attend the following celebration in the park, the family would love to meet you immediately after the service. "You are encouraged to bring a change of clothes for the following celebration of Johnny's life, where food and beverage will be provided."
